Hair and hair fascinates people all over the world. No wonder the Guinness Book has the craziest records in the hair business. Take a guided tour through the world of hair records.
Will you be as fascinated as we are by all these hairs? Will it give you ideas? Let’s plunge into the strange world of the Guinness Book and the records that sometimes make our arms bristling with hair!
The longest beard in the world
This record has been held by Canadian Sarwan Singh since 2013 in Surrey, Canada. At the time of his entry in the book, his beard measured 2.4 meters.
He’s a 58-year-old Indian who holds the record for the longest moustache in the world. Girdhar Vyas didn’t shave for 30 years to get a moustache that is now 6.70 metres long. He spends nearly three hours a day maintaining it. On the program: application of oil, lemon and pepper. He also goes to his barber once a week to keep it well trimmed, which still costs a bit!
This record has long been held by another Indian, Ram Singh Chauhan (with 4.29 meters) who was known to wrap it around his neck to facilitate his movements.
The heaviest weight lifted by a human beard
And yes you read correctly, there is a record of the man who lifted the heaviest weight with his beard. This record was set in Istanbul, Turkey in 2013 by a 61-year-old man, Antanas Kontrimas. It was during a television programme that this man of Lithuanian origin lifted 63.80 kg with his beard. Nice effort!
The youngest woman to grow a full beard…
Harnaam Kaur is a 24 year old English girl of Pakistani origin and bears this title. She suffers from Stein-Leventhal Syndrome (a disease that accelerates hair growth excessively). After having experienced this phenomenon badly at a young age, the young woman now refuses to hide and proudly wears her beard on a daily basis, which certainly predestines her to a destiny much less sad than that of Annie Jones. Now a model, she uses her notoriety to speak out about “body positivity” or how to make people more tolerant of others and to accept themselves, despite beauty criteria that go beyond those dictated by society. She also has an instagram account where she defines herself as a “positive influencer”.
The man with the most beard and mustache championship wins
Because holding a single record is not enough for him, the German Karl-Heinz Hille accumulates 8 on his own. He finished 6 times in the lead in the category of partial imperial beard (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2001) and 2 times first in the overall ranking (1999 and 2003). He participated in the World Beard and Mustache Championships for more than 10 years!
The hairiest teenage girl in the world…
Supatra “Nat” Sasuphan is a young Thai girl who holds the record for the hairiest teenage girl in the world. She suffers from an extremely rare genetic condition called Ambras syndrome, also known as werewolf syndrome, which causes excessive hair growth. Since her Guinness World Record entry in 2010, she found love and decided to shave her face.
The woman with the longest hair in the world
China is home to Xie Qiuping, the woman with the longest hair in the world (5.62 metres). Now 59 years old, this woman stopped cutting her hair in 1973 when she was only 13 years old. She spends hours every day washing and straightening her hair. What a job! Perfect for those who love women with long brown hair…
The hairiest cat on the planet
His name is Colonel Meow, he is 2 years old and he is the result of a cross between a Himalayan and a Persian (cats known for their thick fur). His hair reaches almost 23 centimeters which earned him a Guinness Book of Records in 2013. He lives in Los Angeles and requires a lot of attention: between the hours of daily brushing and the time spent vacuuming the hair he leaves lying around the house, his owner is not bored.
The Guinness Book of Records is full of all kinds of crazy things and the hair business is not spared. Let’s hope that its next edition will still surprise us by adding new records in the moustache, beard, hair and fur categories.
