Who is Harnaam Kaur, the bearded woman?
Harnaam Kaur is a 25-year-old former teaching assistant from Slough, Berkshire. She now works as an activist for a movement that supports her.
At the age of 11, she first noticed hair growing on her face, bust and arms. She was constantly fighting to keep her hair free. She was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries and was cruelly insulted by bullies and even street people about her appearance.
However, at the age of 16, she was christened a Sikh, which forced her to let her hair grow. She now completely embraces her beard and the hair on her chest and arms.
How did the polycystic ovaries grow facial hair?
Harnaam facial hair is caused by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). The syndrome is a common condition that affects the reproductive organs. And it is one of the main causes of infertility in women.
One of the main characteristics of the disease is having an excess of androgens, which are high levels of male hormones in the body. Because of these hormones, women may experience physical symptoms such as excess hair on the face or body. Especially on the back and chest. PCOS also causes irregular periods and enlarged ovaries, which contain fluid-filled sacs around the eggs. Common symptoms of the disease include difficult pregnancy, weight gain, oily skin, acne and fine hair.
What are Harnaam’s records?
Despite his condition, Harnaam has received international recognition for his appearance. In September 2016, she was listed on the Guinness World Records as the youngest woman in the world with a full beard.
Her record citation read, “Now, with a beard measuring up to six inches in places, she overcame years of bullying to own her appearance and achieved this record title at the age of 24 years and 282 days.”
And speaking of his record, Harnaam said, “I hope that those who read or see my record can take a positive inspiration and realize that no matter who you are or what you look like, you are officially amazing.”
In March 2016, she also became the first woman with a beard to walk the catwalk at London Fashion Week by opening the runway for Marianna Harutunian. Harnaam also gives motivational talks and campaigns for confidence in her body. She signed a contract with Wanted Models in Paris.
